I can’t entirely remember what we had to eat. Three of us had nachos of some variety and Mr BOTR had a chicken dish which came in a really cute pastry case. We also order battered and fried vegetables and potato wedges with jalapeños and cheese to share. What I can tell you is my nachos were delicious. Now you might be thinking to yourselves ‘nachos really?’. But I have, through extensive research, (read: I am quite often peckish) realised that nachos can be ruined by several things, over cooking, runny salsa, too much cheese (I know really there can never be too much cheese, but I hate it when it goes all slimy and greasy and makes everything stick together) and not enough jalapeños to add flavour.
The Cuban has this just right. Finely diced jalapeños sprinkled over the nachos with a decent amount of cheese. All dips are separate from the nacho in little bowls. It is perfect. No slimy nachos. No mixed dips. I don’t like people mixing my food up. It makes me all twitchy. All of the chips were warm and crisp and I really, really enjoyed them. The after picture would have been an empty bowl.
Before our food was ready, a little tray of meatballs with spicy cheese sauce was brought to our table. As two of our party don’t eat meat (still meat free, it’s been a year now!) the other two had them. They did indeed smell amazing and I was assured that they tasted just as good!
The sides were really quirky, fried courgettes were really refreshing and I have to say this was the first time I have ever eaten battered courgette! And the wedges were great, and again they were not dripping grease from too much cheese.
The Cuban is really cute to look at, all wooden interiors and bright tables and chairs, they have a huge cocktail menu (I didn’t indulge, but I have been told they do a mean mojito) and the service was good and the staff helpful and friendly.
My only gripe about our visit would be the limitations placed on vegetarian dishes. You would be hard pushed to order a ‘real dinner’ in there. But for a light bite, I can’t recommend it enough. I am sure that the recipes could be tweaked if you asked, we didn’t as we were not having a big meal! But if you are a fan of flesh, there are so many things on the menu to tempt you!
I will definitely be going back for the nachos alone!
