Earlier in the week I was able to fire off a few questions to the talented Cristel Mifsud, the young lady behind Shorji. Having seen her winning collection in May I was really pleased to be able to see her new collection at this Runway event. Sadly my photos do her creations very little justice. (Note to self: get taller or lurk in the press pit more often.)
Watching her designs make their way down the catwalk I was struck by how much her design has come on since May of this year, and I noted that her pieces had a more adult feel to them this time around, with darker colours and animal print, and slogan vest tops that would surely inspire a harder work out!
Although it is worth mentioning that the last time we saw her, we only saw three of her designs as it was a capsule collection so she could enter the Fashionclash competition in the Netherlands…
Since winning the Runway event in May how has life changed for you?
Past few months have been very hectic and little crazy. Flying off to Maastricht to show case. Setting up my website and on-line shop, which will open sometime mid November (if everything goes to plan) plus getting everything sorted for Runway Select.
What was the inspiration behind your new collection?
My collection is split into two, the first part of my collection was inspired by movement, speed and power. The second part was inspired by silence and feeling powerless.
If you could collaborate with any other designer who would it be, and why?
I would have liked to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Alexander McQueen. I loved his creativity and darkness in his designing.
Where do you see Shorji in five years time?
Hopefully making fashion design my full-time job and having a successful on-line store.
What advice would you give to any budding designers out there?
To work hard and grab any opportunity you can get.
