The husband and I went to pick up a friend from Malaga Airport yesterday. Then we spent most of the day wandering around Torremolinos.
I don’t know what I think about the town itself as we didn’t see all of it. The part you drive through to get to the seafront is bustling with shops, bars and restaurants, the roads are really busy and there were loads of people out and about, finding parking was a bit of a pain, but when we did it was only a €1. The promenade and beach were really nice.
I have heard of Torremolinos before, mostly from childhood friends summer holidays, but it wasn’t at all what I expected. We ate ‘tapas’ at a place called ‘Chopp’ it was the busiest place around and we figured that meant the food was good. Alas that didn’t quite work out as planned, it wasn’t bad food, but it wasn’t great. After that we went for a walk and took in the surroundings. The promenade has loads and I do mean loads of beach bar / restaurants that all have a huge array of fish, so if you don’t like pork, this is where you should head to if you are in that area of town! Although all that fish isn’t exactly a surprise given the history of the town!
The town is surrounded by a mountainous region so it makes for a quite a pretty view, the contrast of modern buildings with the hills behind them. It is also quite a taxing place to walk around because of those hills! We dropped our friend at his hotel, we were meant to take him back to the airport, but we got lost on the way there! Seriously Malaga, your road signs are not good! Not good at all!
I saw a lot of signs for activities to do there, you can see crocodiles at the local nature park. There is also an aqua park. There are also caves. So I can see the appeal of making this a family holiday destination. It took us about an hour and half to get back from there to Gibraltar and that was using a mix of toll roads and other routes.
(I wont fib, I did get a vibe of that TV show Benidorm from some of the places we saw, but it certainly wasn’t as bad as some people have tried to paint it!)
