I’m not sure as to why we’ve never tried Gatsby’s before, but last night that was rectified. We had been over at a friend’s place and they suggested that we try it out.
If you don’t know where Gatsby’s is already (it has been in business since 1988, so anyone familiar with Gibraltar most likely will) it is on the corner of Watergardens, actually at the very end and close to Ocean Village. Maybe this is why we’ve always overlooked it?
We got seated and ordered a drink and then set about perusing the menu. Oh my goodness. Seriously the menu. I want to say something eloquent and clever but YUM will have to suffice. Both the husband and I were stumped. I rarely have trouble deciding what to eat, but there was so much on offer. In the end we opted to share a starter, I forgot to get a picture of it, in truth I remembered about half way through us behaving a little bit like locusts and didn’t think it would exactly make the most appetising of images. Before our starters made it to the table we were brought some fried potatoes skins with a sweet chilli sauce, which were delicious, the sauce had a very pleasant kick to it.
For our starter we had grilled asparagus served with soft poached egg & Hollandaise sauce, this normally comes wrapped in prosciutto, but when we said we didn’t eat piggies the chef (who was out on the restaurant floor) kindly offered to make it minus the meat. It was delicious, the asparagus was firm and crunchy and the sauce was light and creamy and the egg was perfectly cooked.
For my main course I had beef stir fry, this came with green and red peppers, onions, oyster sauce and pilau rice. It was an enormous serving, so much so, that the husband got to eat a third of it as well!
My husband ordered a fillet steak which was stuffed with king prawns. It came with chunky cut chips, green beans, red pepper (I think) and was served on a bed of leaves with toasted bread.
Both meals and you’ll have to take my word for it on the starter, were presented beautifully. They both tasted amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the addition of the prawns stuffed inside made for a unique blend of flavours. My stir fry was moist, flavoursome and the beef was so tender, it practically melted in your mouth.
We didn’t have a dessert, as we were both stuffed full from what we had already eaten. The portions in Gatsby’s are big. They are man size, I refuse to believe anyone eating here would or could complain of leaving and feeling peckish! The staff were really nice as well, as I mentioned earlier the chef was out on the restaurant floor and he was so enthusiastic and friendly that it made you feel like a very valued customer.
My only criticism and it is a very small one, is that the menu doesn’t seem to have an awful lot to offer anyone who is a vegetarian, I mention small for a reason, the chef happily altered a dish for us, so I am willing to wager that he would do exactly the same on other meals, tweaking dishes for those who don’t eat meat. I feel obliged to mention that there was a very good selection of fishy dishes to choose from for those that are pescatarian!
We will definitely be going back, perhaps skipping starters next time so we can sample some of the desserts! Yum!
