My ignorance regarding the religious background of the Three Kings, would probably get me lynched in certain quarters, but last year we missed the parade / cavalcade. We stumbled upon Main Street, filled to bursting with people, heard band music and tried to see what was going on, but to no avail. We were off to dinner in Spain, so we made a mental note to see what it was all about this year.
Our neighbours invited us to stand and travel down to town with them, which we did. We left a little later than planned as we have all gotten the Gib cold. It seems to be doing the rounds!
I for one was really impressed with a number of things, the Police presence, there, yet very relaxed, friendly and casual, not like Police in the UK when a similar event takes place, the sheer volume of people, the way everyone came together and the quality and detail of some of the floats. The atmosphere was so lovely as well.
As I said I have no knowledge with regards to the Three Kings, I am guessing this parade is to celebrate their arrival and gifts to Jesus? Someone educate me on this fact please, I can’t be bothered with Wikipedia today! Anyway as I said the detail of the floats was awesome, although I am not entirely sure what Star Wars has to do with Jesus, if there are Ewoks in the Bible I might read it… (Sorry.)
Below are the pictures I took. My position in the crowd and my stunted height didn’t exactly make for award-winning pictures, but they will give you the general idea of what the floats looked like. For anyone who has never been, I would say make sure you go at least once in your life, it was for me a great experience. I will admit though that getting pelted in the face with boiled sweets was something of a shock, but the sugar helped ease the pain 😉 Maybe next year only the girls should be allowed to throw them!?! On another note, Main Street afterwards was literally covered in candy. I felt like I was in Wonkaland. It wasn’t a bad place to be at all!
